Chasing Storms, Finding Love: Our New York Times Vows Story
When the New York Times reached out to feature Tommy and me in their Mini Vows column, it felt like stepping into a dream. This series is known for telling extraordinary love stories and ours, born under storm clouds, stitched together by cameras and wild places, was one of them. Published on August 8, 2025, the piece was titled “Chasing Tornadoes and Supercells on Their First Date.” It captured the essence of us, but the real story lives in the moments between the lines.

The First Connection
In early 2023, I was heli-skiing in Alaska when Tommy first sent me a message on Instagram. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. Photographers reach out to each other often, but as we began to talk, I realized he shared something rare, an insatiable drive for exploration matched with the discipline and artistry to tell meaningful stories through film and photography.
We met in person in March 2023, but it was that May when everything shifted. Tommy invited me to join his storm-chasing team for a ten-day expedition across Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. It was an unconventional first date, but for both of us, it felt natural. We set out in two trucks with a meteorologist, tracking storm cells across the open plains, waiting for skies to turn the improbable shades of blue and purple that only supercells can create.
One evening, after a day of chasing lightning and building timelapse sequences, we kissed under a Nebraska sky. It wasn’t dramatic in the way storms are but it was electric. That was the beginning of us.

Adventures That Defined Us
The New York Times captured some of these milestones, but our love story has been written across continents. From Jackson Hole to Everest, Patagonia to Zambia, our relationship has always lived at the edge of adventure.
In 2023, I left for an extended expedition on Everest’s north side in Tibet. Even across time zones and the brutal realities of altitude, Tommy and I stayed in daily contact. He was competing in an Ironman in Wisconsin while I was acclimatizing at 21,000 feet. That contrast was somehow exactly who we were. Two people chasing big goals, but never too far apart to share them with each other.
By the end of that climb, I knew I wanted a life with him. Within weeks, I moved to Boulder, Colorado.
The Proposal
In September 2024, we were on assignment at Sungani Lodge in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Work had us balancing roles, behind the lens and in front of it, creating content for luxury safari storytelling. But on one quiet night, under a wide African sky, Tommy set the cameras aside. He asked me to marry him.

A Tahoe Wedding
On July 27, 2025, we were married at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Nevada. True to form, before the ceremony we went tandem water-skiing, a nod to the spirit of our first storm-chasing adventure. The ceremony itself was lakeside and intimate, with family, close friends and words that reflected the life we are building. It was by far the best day of my life.

Seeing Our Love Story in Print
Seeing our story in the New York Times was surreal. I remember holding the article in my hands and thinking about the places we had been together, from glaciers to deserts to oceans, and how all of that had been distilled into a headline about chasing storms. Our love story has often been shaped by extremes, yet it was the quieter moments that came to mind as I read it. I thought of mornings with coffee, late nights editing together, walking Honey along the foothills, and the small rituals that stitch our days together. The storms brought us together, but it is the everyday, the shared meals, the laughter, the countless ordinary hours, that keeps us grounded and reminds us what matters most.
Looking Ahead
Now, from our home in Boulder, our work continues to evolve. Tommy leads creative productions through Triage Creative and develops international documentary projects while also expanding his fine art print collections at Tommy Joyce Fine Art Photography. My focus has turned to Britt Elizabeth Art, where I share limited edition fine art prints that bring the beauty of wild places into homes and spaces around the world. Alongside this, I serve as social media lead for ROAR AFRICA, a company redefining luxury travel through journeys that highlight Africa’s landscapes, culture and conservation.
If our Mini Vows story says anything, it is that life and art are intertwined. The way we create is the way we live, with curiosity, passion and reverence for the moments and places that shape us.
What has surprised me most in this journey is how love and creativity fuel each other. Chasing storms and climbing mountains sharpened our instincts as artists, but it also sharpened the way we show up for each other. Whether it’s setting alarms at odd hours to catch first light, packing gear for weeks in the field, or piecing together edits late into the night, we’ve learned that partnership is the most beneficial thing we have. Each assignment, from the icy cliffs of Greenland to the heat of the Namib Desert, has reminded us that the stories we create are richer when they are shared. The art we bring into the world is not just the product of cameras and travels, it’s the product of a life lived together, where every photograph carries both of our fingerprints and every adventure becomes a chapter in the same unfolding story.
As I think back on the path that led us here, it feels like the storms were only the prologue. What matters are the stories we continue to tell, through images, through words, through the way we choose to live each day. Love has made the wild places wilder and the quiet moments richer. If there is a lesson in all of this, it’s that chasing storms may have brought us together, but creating a life filled with art, adventure, and meaning is what keeps us moving forward.
